Introduction: A quality 5yo 16.2hh Thoroughbred by Star Turn, “Hilly” is a well-educated, competitive type with ring miles and a premium profile for the amateur or young rider. He jumps to 1.00m with wins and placings, is placing in Preliminary dressage, and has evented to 80cm. Light in a snaffle in all three phases, he offers three good paces, lateral work and flying changes, backed by easy, professional management and flexible day-to-day living.
Education, skills and experience: Raced once and retired as too slow, Hilly has been retrained as a showjumper/eventer from early 2025. He has won and placed up to 1.00m, including a Thoroughbred Six Bar win to 1.20m, competed at Equimillions New Star 2025, and is placing in Preliminary dressage. He is competing in a snaffle in all phases. On the flat he presents established work including lateral movements and flying changes. He has low-level cross country schooling and competes 80cm.
General demeanour under saddle: A willing, responsive ride who is soft and light in the bridle and happily comes together, Hilly is tolerant of rider mistakes and generally calm and reliable. He can be looky in certain situations and may spin away from something - if surprised and he is on his own - so he benefits from a confident, organised ride. He has been unbothered by farm life, traffic, machinery and dogs, and is described as non-reactive unless something major happens.
Current workload / fitness: In work five-plus times per week and currently competing. He does not need regular riding to remain reliable and is safe to hop on after a spell.
Handling: Unflappable and well mannered to handle day-to-day. Easy to catch, lead, tie, wash and clip. Self-loads and travels quietly, and is reliable for the farrier and vet. He lunges, can lead other horses, and is safe and quiet to ride near cattle and sheep. He is not concerned by busy roads, tractors, trucks, motorbikes or dogs.
Feeding and management: On hard feed twice daily with hay, plus joint supplement and salt. Management is flexible — happy in a herd, stabled part- or full-time, or kept on his own.
Medical history: Typical flat TB feet with low heels; currently managed with regular therapeutic shoeing (3D pads) on a six-week cycle. No past or present medical issues reported; supplements used as a preventative. Vaccinated for Tetanus and Strangles (January 2026). Last dental December 2025 (no issues noted). Past x-rays available. Vet check welcome at buyer’s expense.
Rider Suitability: Best matched to a capable novice through experienced rider in regular professional instruction wanting a competitive TB to continue in showjumping (to ~1.00m) and dressage (Prelim/Novice). He would suit juniors, young riders or amateurs. For eventing, he suits a rider prepared to continue consistent cross country schooling and ride through occasional lookiness, especially when out alone.
Reason for sale: Owner has other young horses to bring on.
